Colonia day trip: package tour

Colonia day trip: package tour

I had been wanting to take a day trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay to check out the Unesco World Heritage city, Colonia. I actually tried to go last Sunday, but all of the return trips were fully booked. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because I then found out about the day trip packages offered by the ferry company, Buquebus.

For AR$149 (about US$41), you get:

1. Round-trip first class on the slow ferry (3 hrs vs. the fast ferry which is 1 hr). I was able to sleep for several hours in these comfortable chairs, both coming and going!

2. Lunch on the ferry: "triple" ham and cheese sandwich (3 halves of a triple-decker sandwich), water, and "cereal bar" (what it sounds like - mine was dulce de leche flavor).

3. City Tour in Colonia. For those thinking about booking a day trip package, I would recommend this one (called "An Unforgettable Day") vs. the one called "A Luxury Day." The Luxury package is the same as this one, only about AR$50 extra which pays for lunch in Colonia. I saw what they were eating, and it looked like pasta or roast chicken - not worth it. Also, you can upgrade to the fast ferry, but since they all arrive in Colonia at the same time, they all have the same city tour. Plus, because of how the schedules worked out today, the fast ferry people either had no free time, or too much free time in Colonia.

4. Plus, the slow ferry has this free live entertainment! It was so random; it was a guy singing songs in the atrium area of the ferry!
