Kruger Safari Wildlife: the Big 5

Kruger Safari Wildlife: the Big 5

Unfortunately my group didn't get to see all of the Big 5, the name given to the animals most dangerous to hunt on foot: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. But we did get to see 3 of the Big 5.

We came across a lot of lone buffalo throughout our five day safari, but on the second to last day we drove right up to a herd of about 250 buffalo. If you click on the image to enlarge, you can see that they have a cool middle-part hairdo! (Not really - it's their horns)

We also came across a breeding herd of elephants, so we got to see elephants big and small!

On the very last morning drive before we left, one of the South Africans in our group, an outdoorsman who was very skilled at identifying the animals and birds, spotted a rhino in the distance. We couldn't drive closer because it was on another private reserve, but at least we caught a glimpse of it! Plus it was the special white rhino (not really white, the name is a bastardization of the original Dutch word for wide, referring to the rhino's wide mouth).
