Lockdown Day 50: Quarantine hotel breakfast redux
May 20

May 20 Lockdown Day 50: Quarantine hotel breakfast redux

Kai
Shanghai

Have I become nostalgic for the meals of quarantine hotels?

Lockdown Day 49: Quick lunch and dinner
May 19

May 19 Lockdown Day 49: Quick lunch and dinner

Kai
Shanghai

Frozen dumplings and easy-to-reheat dishes make weekdays a lot easier.

Lockdown Day 48: Two fish pastas in 10 hours, and THREE COVID tests in 6 hours!
May 18

May 18 Lockdown Day 48: Two fish pastas in 10 hours, and THREE COVID tests in 6 hours!

Kai
Shanghai

Only in our absurd world could we do a PCR test, where our antigen tests are checked, followed up immediately with another antigen test (brand of test does not matter), and yet another antigen test (brand does matter this time) 6 hours later.

Lockdown Day 47: Ready-to-heat food from government deliveries
May 17

May 17 Lockdown Day 47: Ready-to-heat food from government deliveries

Kai
Shanghai

Today we got a delivery of ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat food, and I had the ready-to-heat zongzi 粽子 from a previous delivery for lunch. Plus, an oddly specific request for tonight’s midnight antigen test.

Lockdown Day 46: Budae jjigae ("army stew"), and the end is in sight and we're... halfway there??
May 16

May 16 Lockdown Day 46: Budae jjigae ("army stew"), and the end is in sight and we're... halfway there??

Kai
Shanghai

Second time making budae jjigae, in order to use up that Shanghai red sausage. And we’re still locked in, but the government announced that we should be resuming normal lives … a month and a half from now? So we’re only halfway through?

Lockdown Day 45: From Anson Mills in South Carolina to my kitchen in Shanghai
May 15

May 15 Lockdown Day 45: From Anson Mills in South Carolina to my kitchen in Shanghai

Kai
Shanghai

Today I finally made these Anson Mills Sea Island Red Peas, which I’ve kept in a freezer ever since April 2020. And in other news, there was an announcement that Shanghai might be gradually opening up?

Lockdown Day 44: Dates, Scallions, and Watermelon...
May 14

May 14 Lockdown Day 44: Dates, Scallions, and Watermelon...

Kai
Shanghai

A venture to the gate to get scallions from a colleague, and then an unheard-of venture just outside of the gate to pick up a group purchase of watermelon.

Lockdown Day 43: Blanching dry noodles - that's all it takes
May 13

May 13 Lockdown Day 43: Blanching dry noodles - that's all it takes

Kai
Shanghai

Stir-fry noodles has become one of my go-to meals lately! And that means I’ve gotten a lot of practice with technique.

Lockdown Day 42: A rare peek "outside" to get medicine, and super quick Chinese chive pesto and chicken pasta
May 12

May 12 Lockdown Day 42: A rare peek "outside" to get medicine, and super quick Chinese chive pesto and chicken pasta

Kai
Shanghai

It was a go-go-go day

Lockdown Day 41: Cucumber spiral! And more Kafkaesque words and missing videos...
May 11

May 11 Lockdown Day 41: Cucumber spiral! And more Kafkaesque words and missing videos...

Kai
Shanghai

I was excited to try a simple technique for cutting cucumbers, which I’ve come across twice in a week or so! And for the umpteenth time in a week, more obfuscations and missing pictures about the lockdown situation…

Lockdown Day 40: Tough Day
May 10

May 10 Lockdown Day 40: Tough Day

Kai
Shanghai

Today was such a slog, I even forgot to take a picture of a meal! A perfect day for comfort food - lentil shepherd’s pie.

Lockdown Day 39: The most Kafkaesque explanation of 2x/day antigen testing + 1x/day PCR testing
May 9

May 9 Lockdown Day 39: The most Kafkaesque explanation of 2x/day antigen testing + 1x/day PCR testing

Kai
Shanghai

“Why do we do 2x [antigen] tests a day? The test on the same day is to see if we were infected during the [earlier] PCR test, and the following morning’s test is to see if the PCR test from the day before was correct.”

Lockdown Day 38: The gift of chicken, and coming out of lockdown only to be locked down again
May 8

May 8 Lockdown Day 38: The gift of chicken, and coming out of lockdown only to be locked down again

Kai
Shanghai

I got the gift of a whole chicken from my friend, and I gifted back a chicken dinner. And our compound is now supposed to be free, except the neighborhood committee has put their entire jurisdiction back under the strictest lockdown.

Lockdown Day 37: Making homemade cottage cheese (standing in for ricotta)!
May 7

May 7 Lockdown Day 37: Making homemade cottage cheese (standing in for ricotta)!

Kai
Shanghai

I’ve never seen ricotta sold in Shanghai, not even in expensive expat-oriented supermarkets. But in this lockdown, with a carton of milk from the government, I found out how easy it was to make my own! Plus, a notice was sent saying that we’ll be locked up for at least another week, even though we haven’t had cases in the last 13 days.

Lockdown Day 36: Lactone tofu...?
May 6

May 6 Lockdown Day 36: Lactone tofu...?

Kai
Shanghai

Experimenting with the tofu that was in our May 1 gift box

Lockdown Day 35: Mastering fresh noodles, and a delightful holiday-themed delivery!
May 5

May 5 Lockdown Day 35: Mastering fresh noodles, and a delightful holiday-themed delivery!

Kai
Shanghai

I’ve been practicing cooking the fresh noodles all week, and I think I’ve finally got it down. And we got a delivery of zongzi 粽子!

Lockdown Day 34: Yuan Yang coffee-milk-tea, and blackened cod mantou sliders
May 4

May 4 Lockdown Day 34: Yuan Yang coffee-milk-tea, and blackened cod mantou sliders

Kai
Shanghai

Last day of the 5-day holiday meant more experiments and discoveries in the kitchen, using my government rations.

Lockdown Day 33: Two recipes to share, to use some of that carrot and bok choy!
May 3

May 3 Lockdown Day 33: Two recipes to share, to use some of that carrot and bok choy!

Kai
Shanghai

The government rations are very generous with the carrots and bok choy. I tried a few new things today, with two successful new recipes - carrot scones and potato bok choy tacos -, and one not so good recipe.

Lockdown Day 32: Playing with my new ingredients
May 2

May 2 Lockdown Day 32: Playing with my new ingredients

Kai
Shanghai

I’m really learning a lot about Chinese ingredients through these government ration deliveries. And having fun too, like making these stuffed mantou.

Lockdown Day 31: The best delivery yet, from Tramy
May 1

May 1 Lockdown Day 31: The best delivery yet, from Tramy

Kai
Shanghai

The tofu - our first ever delivery of tofu! - was put to use right away in a tofu kimchi jjigae.

😱So laborious! Shell-on shrimp 🦐, butterflied, topped with a hemisphere of minced shrimp, decorated with slivered almonds, and then fried. 🙏 Thanks to those in the kitchen who made these tasty morsels for me...🤤
