Berlin Eats: currywurst

The one thing that everyone says one must try when going to Berlin is currywurst. So I decided to take the train out to Prenzlauer Berg to sample Konnopke's Imbiss (Imbiss = snack), recommended by Lonely Planet. As well as many other guidebooks, judging from the long line with other tourists toting cameras. The snack stand was situated underneath the elevated S-bahn tracks, which reminded me of the NY subway tracks when they go aboveground in Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn.

So how was the currywurst? Honestly, disappointing. The sausage is a pale, spongy thing with an odd breading-like outer layer. The "curry" is actually ketchup sprinkled with curry powder. Translation: sweet with no heat or spice.

I had a couple other currywurst stands on my list of restaurants to try, but between all of the other delicious food that Berlin has to offer and this underwhelming experience (with supposedly one of the best in the city), I didn't make it to any other stand for comparison.
