SF Eats: Food truck rage

SF Eats: Food truck rage

Like in many other American cities, the food truck rage is going strong in San Francisco. Off the Grid is an organizer of food truck gatherings at key sites around the city, making it convenient to know where they are going to be, and to sample a few at a time.

I've been to Off the Grid: City Hall a couple of times on my free Fridays.

Spearheaded by the Kogi Korean taco truck in LA (which I didn't like very much, review here), lots of people have been putting out fusion tacos and burritos. I tried the sisig taco from Senor Sisig - Filipino flavored taco. It wasn't bad; it's just that it tastes a lot like a just-average carnitas taco.

A very much hyped food truck is Chairman Bao, maker of gua4bao1. They are supposed to have 45 minute long waits at times, but I lucked out when I went and didn't have to wait in line at all. I had the pork belly with pickled daikon. Very good, but so tiny it's not worth $3.75 and definitely not worth $3.75 and a 45 minute wait.

I really liked the falafel truck, Liba Falafel. You get a pita with a few falafel balls on it, and help yourself to an inventive toppings bar, with items like carrot ribbons and purple cabbage with black sesame seeds.

The Indian truck, Curry Up Now was solid. I had the "deconstructed samosa," basically a chickpea salad on top of crushed samosas - tasty but would be better if it were hot and not lukewarm. I'll be trying their chicken tikka burrito next.

The cupcake trend is still going in San Francisco. I had a tiramisu cupcake from CupKates (what is with food trucks, especially dessert trucks, and their puns?!). Excellent cupcake - moist and not too sweet. Will definitely return.
