Polvorón

Polvorón

I've really loved the Spanish food I've tried so far, but polvorón is not one I can get behind.  These are traditionally eaten around Christmastime, so I picked mine up from the supermarket.  They're sold by weight, and at Mercadona you can put several varieties in one bag because they're the same price and cost code.

The first bite reveals a texture that is a bit sandy and crumbly.  After a few bites, you realize just how extremely sweet this thing is.  After you start to get tired of how sweet it is, then you feel heavy.  They are made traditionally with pig fat and nuts which explains how heavy they become, and obviously another main ingredient is sugar.  The green one in the picture is a vegetarian one made from olive oil - equally as heavy.

The only one above that I liked turned out not to be a polvorón, but rather Bolitas de Coco.  The recipes online point to a ball made from condensed milk and coconut, but this one was dark chocolate covered coconut - basically a Mounds bar in dome shape.
