Valencia Eats: Buñuelo season

Valencia Eats: Buñuelo season

Wintertime is buñuelo and churro season. Buñuelos are like donuts, and like churros, are often eaten with a thick hot chocolate.

I went to this buñuelo place Horchateria El Collado (the name tells you that they have horchata in the warmer months!).

I loved the old-school napkins with the old-school illustration.

It's a small space, so you'll probably have to wait. I like how the waitresses wear uniforms.

And the buñuelo maker stands with his frying station open to the street, making buñuelos nonstop.

It's amazing, he just picks up the dough with one hand from the vat of dough, and drops it into the oil with the same hand a couple seconds later. Just one gesture releases the dough and makes the hole in the middle. Expert!

The finished product.

Don't forget the hot chocolate! Mine is Swiss-style, meaning it has whipped cream.
