Shanghai Hotel Quarantine Diary: Day 6

6:12am - wake up. Do my Centr app exercise.

7:35am - breakfast place outside

7:45am - pick up breakfast

Today’s breakfast had a spectacular newcomer!

That was the mixed grain congee (杂粮粥 za2liang2zhou1). It had that nuttiness from the grains and the rice-ness from the rice. So comforting! I actually saved this until after a work meeting to enjoy it more.

Then there was the usual hard boiled egg (白煮鸡蛋) and yogurt (酸奶).

Another new breakfast item was the steamed bun filled with red bean paste (豆沙包). But this red bean paste was a bit brown…

Then there was the frequent visitor shrimp har gow (港式虾饺), enlivened with hot sauce.

8:20am - call to say we can pick up breakfast

9:20am - temperature check

11:38am - lunch dropped off. Surf-and-turf!

The “surf” part was the salt water prawns (盐水基围虾 yan2shui3ji1wei2xia1). They came so artfully placed in my tray!

Then the “turf” part was the red-braised pork belly (红烧大肉).

Following on the red-braised theme was the red-braised eggplant (红烧茄子).

Then there was the stir-fried cabbage (清炒卷心菜 - this type of cabbage is literally “curled heart vegetable”).

And then there was a curry fried tofu vermicelli soup (咖喱油豆腐粉丝汤). The turmeric flavor was extremely strong!

12:45pm - call to say we can pick up lunch. Man, if you had waited for the call before taking lunch in, the food would have been sitting outside for over an hour!

3:21pm - temperature check

5:48pm - dinner placed outside. Dinner always comes with a bottle of water, which is nice.

Drumstick (豉油皇鸡腿 chi3you2huang2ji1tui3). This was tasty

The kitchen often prepares ribs. This one was a ketchup ribs dish (茄汁排骨). I personally don’t like it when they bread, fry, and sauce the ribs this way, because the coating gets very soggy. I much prefer yesterday’s absolutely delectable salt-pepper-garlic ribs.

Then there was homestyle daikon (家烧白萝卜). Very daikon-y.

And then there was a small portion of red and green bell peppers and bean sprouts (青红椒榨菜银牙yin2ya1 ). I actually don’t remember any preserved mustard tuber in here, despite the name. Also, this dish came in an unusually small portion - usually their servings of vegetables is much more.

Dinner finished off with a seaweed and tiny shrimp egg drop soup (紫菜虾皮蛋花汤). So to be honest, I think I ate so quickly that I didn’t really notice the tiny shrimp!
